Exams Required for Study Abroad

Students who want to study abroad may need to take some exams in order to be accepted to the programs they have applied for. While some of these exams may be exams that test students’ foreign language levels, some exams test students’ knowledge in a certain area. The exams most frequently encountered by students who will study abroad are TOEFL IBT, IELTS, SAT, ACT, SSAT, GMAT, GRE.

TOEFL IBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
TOEFL is a test used all over the world, especially in America and Canada. It is an exam prepared by ETS (Educational Testing Service) headquartered in New Jersey. The TOEFL IBT test is a must take for non-native English speakers to continue their education abroad. The TOEFL IBT exam consists of reading, writing, comprehension and listening sections, and the exam is conducted online over the internet. The TOEFL IBT test consists of four parts and takes a total of four hours. The validity of the TOEFL IBT test is two years.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

The IELTS exam is an exam used to measure the English language level of those who want to study or work in countries where English is used. The IELTS exam is administered within the framework of a globally accepted standard. It is possible to detect from the beginner level to the most advanced level of English. It is an exam that is accepted all over the world and whose accuracy is trusted. Depending on your future plans, you can take one of the IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training exams. SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test )
The SAT exam is an exam required for entry to colleges and universities in the United States. The SAT is an exam administered by the College Board 7 times a year in the United States and 6 times a year in the world. Exam results are valid for two years. The SAT aims to measure the level at which students can use their knowledge in the fields of critical reading, writing-composition and mathematics-geometry, which are required at the university. The SAT exam consists of 2 separate exams, SAT 1 (Reasoning Test) and SAT 2 (Subject Test). The SAT 1, Reasoning Test, is a multiple choice test and takes 3 hours and 45 minutes. It measures the student’s numerical and verbal ability. The main topics of the SAT 2 test are; English, History, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, Japanese and Chinese. You can choose one or more of them.

ACT (American College Testing)
The ACT American College Testing has been used since 1959 to determine the level of students who want to study at university in the United States. It is an alternative to the SAT 1 exam. Although it has been offered for many years, it has become more popular in the 2000s and many universities accept students with ACT scores.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)
The purpose of the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is; While measuring your numerical, verbal and analytical problem skills, it also measures your command of English. It is an important criterion sought by schools for those who want to study abroad at the undergraduate level or postgraduate level. It is a computer-based exam.

GRE (Graduate Record Examination )
The GRE is an exam required to receive graduate and doctorate education, especially in engineering and social sciences, in English-language universities in the United States and other countries. The GRE exam is an exam prepared by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). It is divided into two as GRE Subject Test and General Test.
