UNIVERSITY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
Undergraduate education in the UK usually takes three years. Programs such as medicine, dentistry and architecture may be longer from time to time depending on the university. Unlike England, undergraduate education in universities in Scotland lasts for four years. Undergraduate Education generally starts at the end of September-beginning of October each year. As an exception, some schools also start in January – February terms.
Students who have not taken the A level program must attend a 1-year foundation program before they can receive undergraduate education in the UK. The aim of the Foundation Program is to enable students from countries whose education system is different from England to adapt to the education system there and to complete the missing credits in their education. It is very difficult to be accepted into a program without a foundation program. However, students with a very high grade point average and English level or students who have received diplomas such as IB, A Level in high school can start directly from the first year.
Foundation education is given by some universities and sometimes by private institutions. Every foundation education received from every institution may not be accepted by every university and every department. Therefore, before starting their Foundation education, students should definitely pay attention to where and in which departments they are valid. In order to participate in the Foundation education, it is necessary to have an above-intermediate level of English. Some Foundation programs require a minimum of IELTS 5.5 English level to participate in this program.
The documents required for university admissions, except for Foundation and A Level, are as follows:
- High school diploma
- Transcript
- Two reference letters from his/her teachers
- Letter of Intent
- IELTS or TOEFL score
